“Oh, I make grave mistakes all the time… everything seems to work out.”
Thor: Ragnarok — Thor
Man I love this intro scene where Thor is dangling from the chain and bantering back and forth with Surtur while spinning around in circles! Cracks me up every time! But after he breaks free comes the quote mentioned above. It’s almost like he intended to get captured just to have the opportunity to face Surtur? I’m not encouraging folks to intentionally make poor decisions, but it’s what we do to come out of grave situations that really matter! We should all use our best judgement before making any (and certainly major) decisions. But if you find yourself in a pickle, stay calm, think positive, and use your resources to find a solution!
“It’s okay boss… this was never going to work if they didn’t have something to…”
The Avengers — Phil Coulson
The scene where Coulson is stabbed and eventually dies is shown in small segments throughout the attack on the helicarrier. I love it when he tells Loki that he was going to lose and told him, “You lack conviction.” And then of course proceeds to blast him through a wall! But later, with Fury he gave his final breath uttering the quote above. He died before finishing his thought! So, we don’t know for certain what he was going to say. Fury later alludes to what Coulson may have meant to say — something to bring (the Avengers) them all together.
Two things come to mind from Coulson’s words:
1.) Conviction — I’m in the US, and we don’t have any lack of Conviction here these days… but our beliefs and opinions are vastly spread apart.
2.) United — To bring them all together. I don’t know what it would take to bring back the “United” States of America, but if the extreme polarizing opinions on both sides of the isle would stop shouting and start listening we’d all be better off.
“If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.”
Spiderman: Homecoming — Tony Stark
A little tough love moment from Tony to his young protégé Peter when he takes away his new super spidey suit. And I think we all know people or maybe family members who could use a little tough love, but that’s not entirely the point of this one. Peter believed that having the suit made him Spiderman. Without the suit, though, he would still have all of the awesome strength and heightened senses that the radioactive spider bite gave him. It would be cool if we could all be bitten by that spider, but since we shouldn’t put all of our eggs in that basket, let’s remember that every one of us has our own unique gifts and talents. Don’t let any outside force be a crutch on letting your true inner gifts shine. Let your strength, hope, optimism, courage and determination flow!
“Well, if you consider failure experience…”
Avengers: Infinity War — Thanos
Of course I consider failure experience! Great exchange here between Thanos and Loki shortly before Thanos snaps his neck. Don’t ever let the fear of failing keep you from reaching for your dreams. And when you dream, dream BIG! I love the quote from Thomas Edison, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” The key is to Learn from your failures!
“Ah, Yeah, No… This whole thing is a circle… but not a real circle, more like a freaky circle!”
Thor: Ragnarok — Korg
Definitely one of my favorite quotes that I use in everyday conversations! Ever feel like you’re the hamster running in the cage? You wake up, go to work, come home, cook dinner, watch tv and go to bed. The next day… the same thing. And yes, with kids, you sprinkle in sporting events, school plays and the like on occasion, but for the most part life is pretty routine. Considering those days now, that actually seemed like a normal circle of life, however boring it may have been!
Enter 2020, COVID, and the Freaky Circle… Our world and our lives got turned upside down. This past week my kids were once again on “distance learning” — I can assure you they weren’t learning anything! We’ve cancelled ball games and school events yet again for what seems to be a pretty mild cold at this point. I think a lot of us have forgotten that before this pandemic, people got colds, and the flu, and the seasonal allergies, and had the sniffles, but daily life didn’t get shut down! The saddest part of all of this though is definitely the impact on the kids… Lord help us get out of this Freaky Circle!
I’d love to hear some of your favorite quotes and what they mean to you!
